Conservatives call for new protections to control spread of HMOs

Your local Conservatives are calling for Merton Council to use their planning powers to establish an Article 4 Direction to control the spread of Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO) in our area.

The Article 4 Direction removes the permitted development rights that allow landlords to turn existing residential properties into HMOs, therefore requiring new HMOs to gain planning permission which will give residents more power over the area in which they live.

Labour have recently introduced the Article 4 Direction across much of Labour controlled Mitcham, however this leaves our area vulnerable to family homes being converted to new HMOs.

We understand the need for different types of accommodation, however the breakup of family homes is not a solution to our housing needs.
