The Met Police has announced plans to close the front desks at both Wimbledon and Mitcham police stations, as part of sweeping cuts to front desks across London.
Half of the Met’s 37 front desks, including Wimbledon and Mitcham, will close under the plans, with only eight remaining open 24/7.
This will break Labour Mayor Sadiq Khan’s manifesto pledge to maintain a 24-hour front desk in every borough – in fact, under the plans the nearest 24/7 front desks for Merton residents will be as far away as Acton, Sutton, or Lambeth.
The downgrade also puts another question mark on the future of both Wimbledon and Mitcham police stations, despite repeated claims by Wimbledon’s Lib Dem MP to have ‘saved’ Wimbledon police station.
Your local Conservative councillors have campaigned for years to keep both police stations open, with more police officers and a full set of services.
Therefore, we are organising a petition calling on the Met to reconsider their plans, and keep the front desks at both Wimbledon and Mitcham police stations open. We would be grateful if you could sign the petition below.
