Labour's Health Secretary, Wes Streeting, has announced that the start of work on the long-awaited refurbishment of our St Helier Hospital has been delayed until at least 2032, or as late as 2034.
The blow comes after Merton Labour, backed by the Lib Dems, opposed the much-needed refurbishment. Labour gambled with St Helier's future, and now their own government has put our hospital's future at risk.
The Deputy Chief Executive of the local NHS Trust has said: “If the Health Secretary thinks we can continue to care for patients for 10 years in this building, we invite Wes Streeting to come and see the state of the estate himself.”
That's why local Conservatives are calling for the refurbishment to take place without delay.
